I wanted to be able to update PHP to 8.3 and WordPress to 6.9.1, but VVV wasn’t provisioning – so I decided I needed to update VVV to the latest version.
Updating the vagrant plugins
This should have been easy but wasn’t. Following message came up when trying to run VVV (in order to destroy it!). The only way round it was to load the specific version (1.1.6) of the vagrant-goodhosts plugin it was asking for – not the latest version (1.1.9).
Maybe it was something to do with the --local parameter – see here.
Vagrant failed to initialize at a very early stage: The plugins failed to initialize correctly. This may be due to manual modifications made within the Vagrant home directory. Vagrant can attempt to automatically correct this issue by running: vagrant plugin repair If Vagrant was recently updated, this error may be due to incompatible versions of dependencies. To fix this problem please remove and re-install all plugins. Vagrant can attempt to do this automatically by running: vagrant plugin expunge --reinstall Or you may want to try updating the installed plugins to their latest versions: vagrant plugin update Error message given during initialization: Unable to resolve dependency: user requested vagrant-goodhosts (= 1.1.6)
This took a lot of debugging. To get the “latest” version (VVV 3.15.1 21 May 2025), go to the GitHub site, coz the News & Changelog page is way out of date (VVV 3.5.1 23 October 2020).
But even the latest master release is missing the more recent bug-fix patches. I got caught out by this bug (from the provisioner log):

and the only way to fix it was by getting the latest develop branch.
